Mentoring for Students

Do you want to help shape your own path to becoming a doctor? Then apply for the A² mentoring programme from your first semester!

If you would like to join A² as a mentee, you should be committed and have the following qualities:

  • Currently studying human medicine or dentistry at the HHU Düsseldorf
  • Enjoy being involved in the mentee group and
  • High motivation to participate in seminars, training sessions and network meetings
  • Time resources
  • Willingness to share knowledge and experience
  • Willingness for self-reflection

A² opens up new opportunities for you to develop personally and professionally! It doesn't take up much of your time and is profitable for you and your peers.

Mentoring

As a mentee, you form a peer group with three to four other students. Each group is advised and supported by a medical mentor. The peer group actively shapes the mentoring process!
The group meets personally with their mentor at least four times a year. You prepare and follow up these meetings independently and coordinate them with your mentor. You and your peers choose the topics you would like to discuss.

Self-reflection, self-competence and communicative, social and ethical skills are at the centre of mentoring:

  • What do I want to be and how do I want to be as a doctor?
  • What kind of doctorate do I choose?
  • Where do I limit myself?
  • How am I in teams? And how privately?
  • What is important to me as a doctor and for my life?
  • How can I harmonise my private and professional life?
  • What does my personal career path look like?

Other topics for discussion in the group are the career path and the academic and professional experiences of your mentors.

Training

A² offers you a comprehensive programme of workshops and seminars to strengthen your social and communication skills. The programme is designed to develop your personal key qualifications for your professional and private future.
The seminar topics are tailored to your wishes and needs. You must take part in at least one seminar of your choice per year.
The seminars will focus on the following topics in different contexts:

  • Ethics
  • Communication in the hospital
  • Conflict and time management
  • Mindfulness and resilience
  • Work-life balance
  • Diversity competence

In the case of a later doctorate, the medRSD (Medical Research School Düsseldorf) will recognise your participation in A² seminars and workshops.

Networking

Our networking and themed evenings lay the foundation for good and lasting networking with each other and provide impetus for focussing on common (professional) goals. This is why all A² mentees meet twice a semester for a networking evening, which is organised around a topic of your choice. After a short presentation, you have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss and exchange ideas.
Possible topics include:

  • Medicine and society
  • Job profiles and specialisation
  • Stays abroad
  • Social commitment as a doctor
Coaching

Individual coaching sessions can be requested in the A² Mentoring Programme if required.

You can discuss very personal issues and develop solutions with an experienced coach. Your personal background and circumstances will be taken into account. The offer of coaching is voluntary!
