Becoming a Mentor

We look forward to welcoming you as a mentor in the A² Mentoring Programme!
As an enthusiastic and experienced doctor and/or scientist at the Faculty of Medicine at HHU, you enjoy providing individual and lively support for young talent and advising and accompanying students on their individual path to becoming a doctor.
You are open to your mentees' questions and are happy to give them an insight into your experiences, professional contacts and networks.
You are also interested in new experiences and personal development.

Mentoring

The A² mentoring programme is based on classic peer group mentoring: as a mentor, you personally supervise a small group of four to five medical students (mentees). You advise and support them through their studies and in their development towards a fulfilling professional life.

The mentor and peer group meet in person at least four times a year. Otherwise, as a mentor, you are available to answer questions from the peer group by email or telephone.

The mentees themselves choose the topics they would like to discuss at the meetings. They will inform you of their choice of topic in good time and prepare for and follow up on the meetings.
Central topics may include questions on self-reflection and orientation, self-competence as well as communicative and social-ethical competence:

  • What do I want to be and how do I want to be as a doctor?
  • What kind of doctorate do I choose?
  • Where do I limit myself?
  • How am I in teams? And how privately?
  • What is important to me as a doctor and for my life?
  • How can I harmonise family and career?

Other topics relate to your career path and your personal experiences as a doctor and/or scientist.

Training and Coaching

A special feature of the A² mentoring programme is the innovative approach of joint further development of mentees and mentors through participation in workshops, network meetings and coaching sessions.
For example, A² mentors can take part in seminars of their choice or take advantage of coaching.
The A² coordination team will be happy to help you find a suitable programme or a suitable coach. A² will cover part of the costs incurred.
Participation in the seminar and coaching programme is voluntary.

Networking

Mentees and mentors from all years meet twice a year in a large group for joint network meetings on a topic chosen by the mentees. After a keynote speech, a space is created for joint discussion and exchange.
These themed evenings lay the foundation for good and lasting networking. They also provide impetus for focussing on common professional goals.
Participation in the network meetings is voluntary.
