Abdominal Sonography (Basis)

Under the guidance of student tutors, you will learn systematic sonographic examinations. With the help of reporting exercises, your communication skills will also be trained. To prepare you for the respective course days, an extensive e-learning offer is available in ILIAS with videos, quizzes and the theoretical basics.

As part of the course, it is required that you prepare specific topics in the form of scored antestats to ensure the greatest possible learning success.

Your own progress can be tracked in the form of these antestats, the mock OSCE, and a final exam in OSCE format.

Prerequisite:
Completed macroscopic prep course beginning in the 4th semester.

By registering for the elective, you agree to be scarfed yourself. (Dress in athletic attire if necessary).

Please bring your own towel to wipe off the ultrasound gel.

Information on the examination

The basic sonography course concludes with a practical examination in tOSCE format. In this format, you will be assessed using standardized digital exam papers.

The exam consists of several components:

  1. The first task tests the setting of a specific organ or conduction pathway. You have to document relevant measurements and interpret them based on further questions. In addition, their technique (handling of the device) and the doctor-patient relationship are observed and evaluated.
  2. In the second step, freehand drawings and labeling of two standard planes are carried out from memory.

You will have 5 minutes for each part of the examination. You will be tested in groups of 7 - 3 sounds, 3 lying as a model, 1 drawing. Here you rotate seven times. The exam lasts approx. 60 minutes in groups of three (6 practical stations and 1 drawing station, each lasting 7 minutes including feedback).

Note: Due to the current CoViD-19 situation, the examinations will be held in modified form in groups of two.

The exam is considered passed if the score achieved, including the collected antestat points, is at least 60% of the total achievable score.

Course participants who have not exceeded the maximum absence rate of one absence (OSCEs and small group appointments) are admitted to the examination.  Exceptions in the case of CoViD-19-related absences can be clarified in discussion.

Overview of the maximum achievable points (from winter semester 2019/20):
three pract. OSCE stations (3 x 50 P.) = 150 Points
Drawings (10 P. + 20 P.) = 30 Points
3 Antestats (max. 10 P. x 2) = 20 Points
Maximum total points = 200 Points
Passing limit (60%) = 120 Points
Grade distribution:
very good = 181-200 P. (incl. Antestat)
good = 161-180 P. (incl. Antestat)
satisfactory = 141-160 P.(incl. Antestat)
sufficient = 120-140 P. (incl. Antestat)

The elective subject registration takes place via participation in the sonography antestat. It will be possible to register for this via LSF.
