Senate passes resolution
Trust in science

On 22 February 2022, the Senate of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf unanimously passed a resolution calling upon people to champion the freedom of science and an objective debate of scientific findings, and to take a stand against disinformation, conspiracy myths and in particular hate and incitement in social discourse.

The Senate, which is chaired by Professor Dr Wolfram Trudo Knoefel, expresses its concern about increasing populist efforts to discredit answers attained through scientific methods in the course of the coronavirus pandemic as fundamentally untrustworthy. This not only threatens the cohesion of society, but also destroys the basis for decision-making needed to shape a positive future.

In order to find solutions to current and future threats such as climate change, society needs scientific and technological progress as well as trust in scientific structures and their findings.

In its resolution, the Senate appeals to scientists to take a clear stand against scientifically unsubstantiated claims and provide people with accurate information in the spirit of the “citizens’ university”.
