Application

The Master's degree course in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy begins in the winter semester and lasts 4 semesters. The consecutive full-time course requires a bachelor's degree in psychology that conforms to licensing requirements. Furthermore, a good command of the German language is required for participation in the courses and the patient treatments planned as part of the course, as well as sufficient knowledge of English to understand English-language specialist literature and, if applicable, English-language therapy videos. 

Only complete applications submitted via the HHU application portal by July 15 will be accepted and processed. The allocation of study places is based on the HHU allocation regulations and the admission regulations for the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at HHU. The successful completion of the (licensure-compliant) Bachelor's degree in Psychology is decisive for the allocation of places. If there are more applicants than places, a ranking order will be formed according to the Bachelor's final grade (to 2 decimal places, in the case of several applications in the same ranking place, the decision will be made by lot).

FAQ on the subject of applications

Yes, you can apply for the Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy if you have completed at least 5 semesters of a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (polyvalent) and have demonstrably earned at least 120 credit points in this degree program at the time of application. In this case, please state your current average grade in the transcript of records when applying, or have this certified by your current university. If you have not yet completed your Bachelor's degree, admission is provisional. Proof of successful completion of your Bachelor's degree, including your final grade point average, must be submitted by September 30, otherwise the place allocated to you will be reallocated.

Of course, international Bachelor's graduates from both EU and non-EU/EEA countries can also apply for the Master's in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. However, in order for your application to be considered, the Bachelor's degree program offered by your university must meet the current requirements of the German licensing regulations for psychotherapists (PsychTherApprO) and have a corresponding professional accreditation. Please upload the relevant proof in the application portal.

Please note: At the time of application or at the time of enrolment, all content must have been acquired that is required by the PsychTherApprO incl. Annex 1 in the Bachelor's degree program and must be proven upon application for admission to the psychotherapeutic examination. Subsequent acquisition (post-qualification) of the contents of the Bachelor's degree program is not possible as part of the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at HHU Düsseldorf. 

For your application to be considered, the Bachelor's degree program you have completed must meet the currently valid requirements of the German licensing regulations for psychotherapists (PsychTherApprO) and have a corresponding professional accreditation. Bachelor's degree programs in psychology prior to the amendment of the Psychotherapists Act and the PsychTherApprO in 2020 generally do not meet these criteria.

In addition to the corresponding special regulations in accordance with the regulations for the implementation of selection procedures in admission-restricted degree programs in accordance with the law on admission to higher education in NRW, places are allocated according to the criteria laid down in the admission and admission regulations for the Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy degree program with the degree “Master of Science” at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

The prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree course in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy is the successful completion of a degree course in Psychology leading to a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with at least 180 credit points and a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters. The structure and content of the Bachelor's degree program must correspond to the requirements of the first section of a degree program in accordance with §7 PsychThG and the PsychThApprO (including the associated Annex 1 to the PsychThApprO).

If the number of applicants for the Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy exceeds the number of available study places, a selection will be made according to the final grade of the polyvalent Bachelor's degree program in Psychology. For this purpose, a ranking is formed based on the final grade (up to 2 decimal places). In the event of equal grades, placement on the ranking list is determined by lot.

Applications and admissions are only possible for the winter semester. There are 45 places available per academic year for the Master's degree course in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.
