Mentoring for Students

Do you want to take the initiative in shaping your path to becoming a doctor? Then apply for the A² Mentoring Program starting in your first semester!

If you would like to join A² as a mentee, you should bring the following with you in addition to commitment:

  • current studies in human or dental medicine at the HHU Düsseldorf
  • enjoy being involved in teams and projects
  • high motivation to actively participate in shaping your peer group
  • sufficient time resources
  • willingness to exchange knowledge and experience
  • willingness to self-reflect

A² opens up new opportunities for you to develop personally and professionally with enthusiasm! It does not demand much of your time and is profitable for you and your peers.

The four Aspects of A²

Mentoring

As a mentee, you form a peer group with three to four other students. Each group is personally accompanied through their studies by a physician mentor. You and your peer group actively shape the mentoring process!

You will meet personally with your mentor at least 4 times a year. You prepare and follow up these meetings independently and coordinate them with your mentor. You and your peer group choose the topics you would like to discuss in your group.

Self-reflection and alignment, self-competence as well as communicative, social and ethical skills are the focus of mentoring:

  • What do I want to be and how do I want to be as a physician?
  • What kind of doctorate do I choose?
  • Where do I limit myself?
  • How am I in teams? And how privately?
  • What is important to me as a physician and for my life?
  • How can I balance family and career?

Other topics for group exchange are the career path and the scientific and professional experiences of your mentors.

Training

A² offers you an extensive workshop and seminar program to strengthen your social and communication skills. You must attend at least one seminar of your choice per year. The topics are based entirely on the wishes and needs of the mentees.

A kick-off workshop gets you in the mood for the program. Here you will develop ideas and goals for the mentoring process. You will learn more about the opportunities that A² mentoring offers you and how to make the most of them.

The seminar program serves to develop your personal key qualifications for your medical career. You can indicate seminar topic preferences on the mentee profile form. Each year, you can choose from six seminars based on your wishes and covering these topics:

  • Ethics
  • Communication
  • Conflict management
  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Work-Life-Balance
  • Diversity Competence

Depending on the topic, medRSD (Medical Research School Düsseldorf) will award you credit points for seminar participation.

Networking

Twice a semester, you will meet for cross-group networking meetings. Here you exchange your thoughts and get the opportunity to network. In addition, we also offer you short seminars and input presentations on your desired topics within this framework.

Our network meetings lay the foundation for good and lasting networking among each other. In addition, they provide impulses for the orientation towards common professional goals. As mentees, you choose the topics of the short seminars and input presentations yourself.
Possible topics are:

  • Job descriptions and specialization
  • Stays abroad
  • Social commitment as a physician
  • Presentation and scientific writing

Mentees and mentors from all years also meet twice a year in a large group. These meetings create space for discussions and contacts in a pleasant atmosphere and demonstrate the added value of mutual understanding.

Coaching

If required, the A² Mentoring Program also offers you individual coaching sessions. With an experienced coach, you can discuss very personal issues and develop approaches to solutions.

In one-on-one coaching, our coaches specifically address your personal background and framework conditions. This protected space offers you the opportunity to eliminate individual problems and to work out your own competencies. The offer of coaching is voluntary!
