The alphabetical overview indicates how to dispose of various types of waste correctly. From A for aluminium foil and M for milk cartons to T for toner cartridges, the ABC explains in a straightforward way how to dispose of each product properly. Even if you already know a lot about waste separation, updates mean there is always something new to learn. For example, it is made clear that polystyrene should now be put in the yellow recycling bin. By contrast, photos count as residual waste and should not be disposed of in the same way as paper. Damp/soiled paper towels also count as residual waste.
“Waste separation may seem trivial, but there are still aspects that frequently result in questions. Our ‘Waste ABC’ is a practical guide for everyone at HHU and will be updated on an ongoing basis,” says Claudia Lüpschen from the Heine-Center for Sustainable Development, who created the new guide in collaboration with Division 6, the central chemicals storeroom and the Occupational and Environmental Safety Unit (SAUS). “HHU is constantly working to optimise its waste disposal structures. Each and every one of us needs to do our bit to ensure effective waste separation.”
The better waste is separated, the more efficient recycling will be. And waste can even be avoided in many cases – often without any great effort. Whether buying a bread roll or a coffee-to-go: By bringing your own containers or using reusable dishes, etc., you can help reduce waste or even prevent it being created in the first place.
